Rules

Match Format

  • Regulation time: 5 minutes

  • Submission-only

  • No points or advantages

  • If no submission occurs, match proceeds to EBI Overtime


Gi Division Rules

  • Gi must meet IBJJF legal standards

  • All grips must comply with IBJJF rules

  • No gripping inside sleeves, pants, or belt


No-Gi Division Rules

  • Rashguard required

  • Shorts must be without pockets or zip's.

  • No gripping of shorts or rashguard. 

  • No-Gi IBJJF rules apply where relevant.


Medical & Safety

  • A physical or verbal tap constitutes an immediate submission and must be respected without delay.

  • Competitors must release all submission attempts immediately upon a tap or referee stoppage.

  • The referee has full authority to stop the match at any time if a competitor is deemed unable to intelligently defend themselves, appears injured, or is in immediate danger.

  • A competitor does not need to tap for the referee to stop the match.

  • Any competitor who is rendered unconscious will be stopped immediately and withdrawn from the remainder of the event.

  • If a competitor sustains an injury that prevents safe continuation, the referee may stop the match and award the win to the non-injured competitor.

  • Medical staff decisions are final and take precedence over referee or competitor objections.

  • Competitors must comply immediately with instructions from referees and medical staff.

  • Failure to comply with medical or referee instructions may result in disqualification.


General Fouls

The following actions are strictly prohibited and may result in immediate disqualification at the referee’s discretion:

  • Any form of striking, including punches, slaps, elbows, knees, or kicks

  • Groin strikes or intentional contact to the groin

  • Eye pokes, eye gouging, or placing fingers inside the eyes

  • Threatened or simulated strikes intended to intimidate or force movement

  • Slamming or spiking an opponent

  • Small joint manipulation

  • Grabbing or pulling fingers or toes

  • Pulling hair, ears, nose, or face

  • Biting or scratching

  • Unsportsmanlike conduct or deliberate fouling

  • Ignoring or refusing to follow referee instructions

 

Stalling

  • Passive or intentional stalling may result in:

    • Verbal warning

    • Positional reset

  • Repeated stalling may lead to disqualification


Competitor Conduct

  • Competitors are expected to show respect to:

    • Opponents

    • Referees

    • Event staff

  • Excessive celebration, taunting, foul language, or aggressive behaviour may result in:

    • Warning

    • Disqualification

  • All competitors must comply immediately with referee instructions


Coach, Parent & Spectator Conduct

  • Coaches, parents, and spectators are expected to conduct themselves in a respectful and professional manner at all times.

  • Respect must be shown toward referees, judges, competitors, coaches, event staff, and officials.

  • Abusive language, aggressive behaviour, interference with officiating, or any conduct that disrupts the event will not be tolerated.

  • Coaching is permitted only from designated areas and must not interfere with referee duties or match flow.

  • Any misconduct by a coach, parent, or spectator affiliated with a competitor may result in disciplinary action against that competitor, including:

    • Verbal warning

    • Match interruption or stoppage

    • Disqualification of the affiliated athlete

  • Referees and event officials have full authority to enforce conduct standards, and all such decisions are final.



RULESET 1: JUVENILE & BEGINNER

Submission-Only | 5 Minutes | EBI Overtime

Applies to:

  • Juvenile Under 16 (minimum age 14)

  • Juvenile Under 18

  • Adult Beginner

Illegal Techniques & Submissions

All illegal techniques are governed by the IBJJF ruleset for Juvenile divisions and White Belt divisions, including but not limited to:

Neck & Spine

  • Neck cranks

  • Can-openers

  • Cervical locks

  • Any twisting or cranking of the spine

Leg Locks

  • Heel hooks

  • Knee reaping

  • Kneebars

  • Calf slicers

Upper Body

  • Bicep slicers

  • Wrist locks (illegal for Juveniles)

  • Any shoulder lock applying excessive rotational force beyond IBJJF allowance

Compression & Pressure

  • Rib crushers

  • Spine-compressing body triangle pressure

  • Any submission relying primarily on crushing rather than joint or choke mechanics

 

EBI Overtime (Modified for Juvenile & Beginner)

Structure

  • One overtime round per athlete

  • Maximum of two overtime rounds total

  • Positions alternate between competitors

Starting Positions

  1. Back Control

    • Seatbelt grip

    • Both hooks in

  2. Armbar

    • Standard armbar position

    • No crossed feet over the head

Overtime Win Conditions

  • Submission wins immediately

  • If no submission:

    • Fastest escape time wins

  • If escape times are identical:

    • Referee decision based on:

      • Submission attempts

      • Positional control

      • Overall aggression

 

 

RULESET 2: INTERMEDIATE & EXPERT

Match Format

Legal Techniques & Submissions

  • Legal for both Gi & no Gi. 

    • Heel hooks (inside and outside)

    • Kneebars

    • Toe holds

    • Calf slicers

    • Bicep slicers

    • Wrist locks

    • Leg entanglements and reaping

  • All choke variations (gi and no-gi)

  • All joint locks, compression locks, and rotational locks

Explicitly Illegal Techniques

  • Can opener

  • Twister / any spinal lock involving rotational force on the spine.

Any variation of the above is strictly prohibited.

EBI Overtime (Intermediate & Expert)

Structure

  • One overtime round per athlete

  • Maximum of three overtime rounds

  • Positions alternate between competitors

Starting Positions

  1. Back Control

    • Seatbelt grip

    • Hooks or body triangle permitted

  2. Armbar

    • Standard armbar position

  3. Spiderweb / Triangle Control

    • Referee discretion based on athlete safety and control

Overtime Win Conditions

  • Submission wins immediately

  • If no submission:

    • Fastest escape time wins

  • If escape times are identical:

    • Referee decision based on:

      • Submission attempts

      • Control

      • Aggression

These rules have been carefully selected to mitigate risk and injury, this is an amature competition organised to build competion experiance, community and create fun. It is our imperative as an organisation to minimise injuries and maximise safety.
